Even if the majority of teams and families are on vacation during these summer months, the Winoa group made 2 major investments at its plant in France this August: one in industrial robotics for the safety of our employees, the second in terms of energy efficiency and reduction of the carbon footprint.
This is how 2 robots worth over 600K Euros were added to the melting furnace for the safety of our employees.
The second is a robot allowing to take samples of the molten metal and the temperatures of the furnace automatically. The main advantages are:
Avoid having employees near the melting furnace to collect information, which makes the process much safer for everyone**;
Eliminate fusion stoppages during measurements;
Increase the speed and efficiency of the process.
With 2 samples taken during each preparation of the molten metal, we greatly reduce the risk of burns for our employees.
During these particular times, our CEO Ramesh Krishnan wanted to keep you informed of what is going on within the Winoa group in the attached letter.
Take good care of you and your beloved ones.
Distinguished Clients, Trusted Suppliers and Dear Partners,
Our Winoa family is utterly grateful for the great businesses we have with you. As Mark Knopfler version of Ode to Joy (why worry) goes..
“There should be laughter after pain
There should be sunshine after rain”
I believe in the positivity of humanity and in spite of all the hurdles today, we shall overcome this health hazard soon, learn from the crisis and build sustainability.
Stay healthy, stay safe, kind regards and gratitude from the bottom of my heart (on behalf of every single member of Winoa Family).

Developed by our engineers 4 years ago, the WA Clean technology evolved and grew!
Recently accredited by the International Organization for Standardization via ISO/TR 22770, the WA Clean is an electronic optical device using as working principle an analytical colorimetry method to support the visual assessment of the surface preparation grades of uncoated steel substrates as defined in ISO 8501-1 or SSPC – VIS 1.
PaintSquare Prestige Award honors every year recent innovations actively used in the protective coatings industry. In 2019 PaintSquare readers voted and conferred the Prestige Award Surface Preparation Category to the WA Clean Technology, considering its ability to provide objective, reliable and repeatable evaluations of surface blast – cleaning grades, independently of any human interpretation.
Energy is one of the main costs in the manufacturing of steel abrasives.
Energy prices (natural gas, coal, electricity, oil products) were moving historically more or less parallel to the oil price. However we observed in the past few years more and more volatility and tension on European energy and power markets, with an energy mix evolution creating some tariff distortion at energy producers.
More recently - with anticipations on changes of ETS (Emission Trading System), with oil & gas price increases, with energy tax evolution, and with structural issues at energy producers in main countries such as France and Germany - the European Electricity prices for the year ahead are trading 50% higher than last year.
These current cost dynamics force Winoa to implement a price adjustment to continue providing customer the top quality products and services they have grown to expect.
Sales accelerator in the bustling segment of shot peening in the car and aeronautics industries.
WINOA, the world leader in steel abrasives is a French company established in the heart of the Alps and has signed a distribution agreement with the Japanese company TOYO SEIKO, the world leader in conditioned cut-wire shot. Toyo Seiko is the only provider in the world offering cut wire of "HD" (High Durability) quality, obtained due to a unique and patented production process. The "HD" quality allows users to optimize both the total cost of shot blasting and their environmental footprint by improving their process efficiency by approximately 30%.
With this agreement, Winoa plans to increase its shot-peening sales in both the car industry, where market developments such as vehicles becoming lighter which creates the needs for more and more specific shot blasting solutions, and in the aerospace industry by leveraging the certifications Toyo Seiko has already been granted by customers such as Boeing, GE, Pratt & Whitney.
As Pierre Escolier, Winoa’s President, stressed: "We’re proud of signing this agreement with Toyo Seiko. This alliance will create an unparalleled value proposition in the cut-wire shot market thanks to the combination of Toyo Seiko’s high-value products and of the Winoa group’s high level of service and expertise. It will help accelerate our shot-peening growth by more than 20% a year in strategic industries such as automotive and aerospace."
This high-tech production factory is currently the world's most environmentally friendly steel shot manufacturing facility. The Balmaseda (Spain) site relies on the most modern production techniques to reduce its environmental footprint: dual purification system to ensure a clean environment inside and outside the plant, heat recovery equipment , smart sensors, a high efficiency water treatment plant.

The tight supply situation within the graphite electrodes market has led to limited global availability of graphite electrodes and sharp increases in their prices.
Faced with this sharp and unprecedented escalation in the market prices of graphite electrodes, Winoa has seen its monthly purchasing costs multiplied several folds and is struggling to secure supplies, while facing tightened payment conditions.
This current cost dynamics have forced Winoa to implement in 2018 a new price adjustment related to electrodes. This is handled through a specific price surcharge for Winoa European operations. The company will continue to take all the necessary actions to face this exceptional situation and will closely monitor primary raw materials evolution to keep its customers informed of potential future changes.

Winoa is facing an unprecedented situation of rising costs in its primary raw materials. The current cost dynamics have forced Winoa to implement a worldwide price adjustment to continue providing customer the top quality products and services they have grown to expect.
The recent boom in the production of batteries for electrical vehicles has strained the supply chain of graphite materials and caused a remarkable hike in the market prices of graphite electrodes used in electric arc furnaces for melting steel.
The increasing environmental pressure on the global steel industry is driving an aggressive reduction of the industry carbon emissions. The pressure has triggered technological changes affecting the supply chain of raw materials for steel making which is combining with a reversal in cycle of metal manufacturing commodities. These changes are particularly impacting ferro alloys and refractories.
In addition, after years of capacity buildup, the shipping industry idled ships for the second year and continue to consolidate to reduce overcapacity. These efforts have contributed to major shipping indexes such as the Baltic dry index or China Containerized Freight Index to post double digits growth in 2017.
Over time Winoa has always kept the quality of its products and services at the top of its decisions, today even in the hardest times, the company will continue to strive to maintain the best value for its customers.
The current cost dynamics have forced Winoa to implement a worldwide price adjustment to continue providing customer the top quality products and services they have grown to expect. In parallel the company will take all the necessary actions to face this exceptional situation and will closely monitor primary raw materials evolution to keep its customers informed of potential future changes.
